Ckazaal, as it happens I just got done re-reading a novel in which the “scan, recreate, & destroy” technology is used as you describe. In fact, in Charlie Stross’s “Glasshouse”, the tech (there called “Assembler Gates” or “A-gates”) is used by the good guys to readjust their bodies in a wide variety of ways. The BAD guys subvert the tech to edit memories and create “memetic dictatorships” thereby. Consequently there were society-shaking wars over the very important question of who would control the hardware and software of the A-Gates.

One of the main characters in Glasshouse actually used the A-Gates to reshape herself so that she had four working arms. This was enough to mark her as not being conservative, but was otherwise unremarkable.

Certainly a good point, Ckazaal. One possible response is that if the scanner technology is new, Scan–>Destroy–>Recreate might just easier than Scan–>Destroy–>Enhance in silico–>Recreate.

But if enhancement is something you like to see, then watch this space, because variations on that theme will come up in future Gnosis stories.

Every story I’ve read that uses “scan, recreate, & destroy” teleportation technology never touches on what I think would happen should such a thing ever really come about: how long before someone requests that their copied body have a little less flab, more hair on top of the head, or a larger cock? If we’re willing to be rid of the original, why not be truly rid of it?

All the cells that make up our bodies die and get replaced constantly. I think it’s about every seven years that every cell has been replaced at some point. It just happens instantaneously with a transporter.

Great stuff. Cybernetics I believe is where everything will be soon. I honestly can say I believe we will have some type of robotic servitude especially in the ways of sex. People are already utilizing machines to masturbate. Imagine when they look like us and can perform like us without excuses getting in the way.
